Farm in a Barrel is a simple, effective tool to help someone in need start a backyard farming business. Everything needed to set up a farm is packed into a 55 gallon drum barrel and can be set up in a few hours. The project relies on local economies for inputs and local leadership for management. We’re biased, but we think it’s the next big thing.
WHAT’S IN IT?
Each Farm in a Barrel system includes a 55 gallon drum barrel packed with everything you need to set up your business and begin farming.
- Lightweight, galvanized steel rods
- Chicken wire
- Durable nylon cover
- Feeder and waterer
- All assembly tools needed
HOW DOES IT WORK?
A barrel gets sponsored by a donor or donor group.
The barrel gets sent overseas to someone in need.
The barrel is assembled and inputs are ordered.
Someone in need now has a sustainable business to run!
LAUNCHING IN GHANA
In 2013, Farm in a Barrel was piloted for the first time overseas in Ghana, West Africa. 10 barrels were sent over and offered on a microloan basis to beneficiaries.
To date, 50 Farm in a Barrels are in Ghana and the project is blossoming. We are currently considering building a trade school to produce future systems in country. Stay tuned!
